Maple Leaf Diversions

Once a year, I blog about hockey. Today is the day. I was planning to skip this year, given that my expectations for the Toronto Maple Leafs are the lowest they have ever been, and I did not want to lose all credibility with those who read these pages. (Defence disclaimer - as I pointed out last year, fan is short-form for fanatic and hence musings about sport should not be expected to provide evidence of rationality.)

However, three items caused me to change my mind.
1. A joke forwarded by a Calgary colleague, asking why Hamilton did not have an NHL team? (Answer - Because then Toronto would want one too.) Not nice at all. All I can say is, check the opening night scores.
2. The realization that I have extended family members who impose cruel and unusual punishment on their children by buying Detroit Red Wings pajamas for them. To them as well, check the opening night scores. PS Edit - I have since learned they even spent hard-earned money in tough economic times travelling to Detroit to watch the opening game. All I can say is that at least you got to see one good hockey team score three goals. :)
3. This is likely the only time I can link to the NHL standings this year and point out the fact that the Leafs are undefeated and if the season would end today, they would make the playoffs!

Ok, enough of this. Those for whom this is intended know who you are. However, for a day in this season at least, it is fun to be a Maple Leafs fan.

PS I need to acknowledge with special pride my six year old nephew who roots for the Leafs in spite of his dad having bought him those ugly looking red and white pajamas. Way to go Scott!!!

Such a nice change to blog about hockey instead of politics ;o)

1. That Hamilton joke is funny...real funny :oD

2. How'd you know I bought pjs last night for my daughter? :oD

3. The leafs make the playoffs?? Mission impossible.

I am glad that Leaf fans are so quick to celebrate winning a game...us Detroit fans don't take such pride in winning one battle but rather in winning the war...Stanley Cup.

By the way...it was really neat to see the Stanley Cup in Joe Louis last night and raising of the banner. Never tire of that...4 times we've seen them win the cup already :o)
