GO LEAFS GO!!!
Bear with this entry with some sympathy -- I am a Toronto Maple Leafs fan and today is the opening of the 2007-2008 NHL season. That means today is the only day that with any confidence I can speak favourably of the Maple Leafs and their relative equality with other teams as having a chance at the Stanley Cup. With the exception of the Chicago Black Hawks (who haven't won since 1961 I might gloatingly add), Toronto fans have endured more seasons of disappointments than the followers of any other team. And, in case my lack of optimism for this season isn't overly evident, I fear this is going to be the fortieth consecutive season (about 33 of which I have been actively following, having grown up in Leaf country where hockey punditry was the only way to endure 3 1/2 hrs. of daily bus rides to and from school) in which May and June will have Maple Leaf players perfecting their golf games.
So, with the full awareness of the foolishness of cheering for the Leafs (espcially as I now live in Flames country), qualified by having looked up fanatic in the dictionary , I still cannot deny the impulse to, even with some enthusiasm and faint optimism, join the chant. The chant is doubly enthusiastic tonight tonight and tomorrow, when the Ottawa Senators are the opposition. All victories are special but those against Ottawa and Montreal are extra special.
(To the relief of those who check this page but do not share any passion for sports or things Maple Leaf, I promise to only mention the Leafs if they accomplish something of significance this season. For those who would like to follow them more in depth, there are other blogs that will do a much better job than mine at satisfying your curiousity.)

And what an opening night it was! (lol)... oh well, we dedicated Leaf Fans will stay loyal! It can only get better from here, right?
I can hear some family member who wears a red shirt with wings on it laughing right now... but we still outnumber him! GO LEAFS GO!!!
